Helpful Hints before Surgery
STOP drinking alcohol, caffeine, carbonated drinks, and drinks with sugar.
STOP smoking.
STOP taking blood-thinning medications two weeks before your scheduled surgery date. Remember to discuss this decision with your surgeon.
START exercising. Begin with a 15 minute walk every day. A little bit goes a long way.
START drinking at least eight glasses of water every day.
START reading food labels and learn more about calorie, fat, protein, carbohydrate and sugar content.
START learning how to count grams of protein, carbohydrates, and fats.
START eliminating sugar and simple carbohydrates (white potatoes, white bread, white rice, etc) from your diet.
START choosing complex carbohydrates (sweet potatoes, wheat bread, brown rice, etc.).
START a food journal and write down everything you eat and drink, making sure to include the number of grams of protein for each food item.
START chewing your food thoroughly (20-30 times if you are having the Lapband, the Roux En Y Gastric Bypass, or any other bariatric surgery).
START a calendar. Record your support group meetings and your follow-up appointments with your ABC surgeon and your primary doctor.
START your liquid diet 2 weeks before your surgery date.
