To be considered for bariatric surgery, you must meet the following criteria:
- Have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of at least 40 (usually 100 lbs or more over ideal body weight) or have serious medical condition with a BMI of 35 to 39.9. Medical condition should be related to obesity and should improve with weight loss. (Please see BMI chart below).
- Have failed other weight loss efforts, such as diet, exercise, lifestyle changes, and/or medications.
- Must fully understand the benefits, potential risks, and side effects of the procedure.
- Must be committed to lifestyle changes and long-term follow-up. This is required for continued weight loss success.
- Should not have any medical, psychiatric, or emotional condition that would prohibit you from surgery.
- Must be motivated and have realistic expectations of the surgery. Surgery is a only a tool to help you lose weight.
